5 April 2022: This is the one-hundred and ninth mixtape by the Funky Soul Burner. This is a mix to feature 3 tracks from countries in conflict or war (Ukraine, Yemen, and Nigeria) along side music that complements the theme. Yemen + Witch + Abet Abet are the 3 tracks featured in the mixtape. There are many organizations within each of these countries providing assistance, if you are wanting to help or donate.
MXITAPE 109 by Funky Soul Burner is a sonic journey that explores the theme of war, conflict, and peace through an eclectic mix of tracks. The mixtape opens with a haunting melody from Turkish musician Erkan Ogur’s “Yemen”, which sets the tone for the rest of the mix. The next track, “Witch” by Apashe and Alina Pash, introduces electronic beats to the mix, followed by Quicksand’s “Missile Command” which brings back the grunge and punk rock sounds of the ’90s.
The mixtape also features tracks from lesser-known artists like Tia Maria Produções and DJ B.Boy’s “Kuribotas”, a fusion of Angolan rhythms and electronic beats, and Samuel Yirga’s “Abet Abet”, an instrumental track that blends Ethiopian jazz and classical music.
Funky Soul Burner also includes some of the most exciting releases of the year, such as “Vaults” by Bronson, a supergroup composed of ODESZA and Golden Features, and “Midnight Sun” by Nilüfer Yanya, an indie-pop gem with a catchy chorus.
MIXTAPE 109 closes with “Mwana” by Sampa The Great, featuring Mwanje Tembo, Theresa Mutale Tembo, and Sunburnt Soul Choir. The track is a beautiful tribute to African heritage and a reminder that we are all connected, no matter where we come from.
