Funky Soul Burner’s MIXTAPE 16: Jettison the Curse takes you on a sonic voyage through a wide range of genres, showcasing the unique and eclectic tastes of this seasoned mixtape artist. Inspired by legendary DJs like John Peel, Gilles Peterson, and Norman Jay, Funky Soul Burner blends hip hop, world, electronica, dub, rock, jazz, indie, reggae, classical Indian, and Western music into thematic mixtapes that are meant to reflect the fluctuations of life and feeling. Jettison the Curse is no exception, and with 18 carefully curated tracks, it offers an immersive and deeply emotional journey through sound.
The mixtape starts with the hauntingly beautiful Prelude 12/21 by AFI, setting the stage for the listener to delve into a unique soundscape. Lee Coombs’ Thrust One (Remix) and Apparat’s Arcadia take things up a notch, showcasing an electronic, almost otherworldly sound. Cee-Lo’s Bass Head Jazz brings in a jazzy, soulful element, followed by Björk’s Who Is It (Carry My Joy On My Left, Carry My Pain On My Right), which incorporates Tanya Tagaq and Razhel’s powerful vocals.
As the mixtape progresses, the sounds become more intense and varied. Amon Tobin’s The Lighthouse and Galactic’s The Moil take you on a journey through dub and funk, while Layo & Bushwacka!’s Sunshine In Ipanema and Amadou & Mariam’s Artistiya bring in a more worldly, almost tribal feel. Ratatat’s Mi Viejo and Portishead’s The Rip showcase a more melancholic side of the mixtape, while Nas’s Untitled and Ellen Allien’s Come are more upbeat and energetic.
Funky Soul Burner ends the mixtape with Lil Wayne’s Lollipop, Rockwell’s Somebody’s Watching Me, David K’s K-pod, Massive Attack’s Montage, and Hard-Fi’s Stars of CCTV, which bring in a darker, edgier sound. Through all 18 tracks, the mixtape ebbs and flows, taking you on a musical journey that reflects the twists and turns of life itself.
